Who is Candy Matthews?

Candy Matthews was born in Australia in the 1960‘s. At a few months of age her family moved to the UK where she was to spend the following 25 years almost constantly moving around England and Germany. With little time to integrate into any community Candy found herself developing a close connection with nature and the interior world of her imagination. She had always been slightly surprised at being human and puzzled at the behaviour of the other human beings around her. This isolation became almost unbearable. Candy‘s saving Grace was the discovery of meditation when she was 15 years old, the technique for which was found in the pages of a Woman‘s magazine in the then 1970‘s.

In the 1980‘s Candy returned to Australia with her first child and commenced study in Art, originally to learn watercolour painting. Candy‘s explorations took her through drawing, painting, printing, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, photography, computer graphics and sculpture. She found herself an art student gypsy constantly travelling to different TAFE campuses, with different lecturers and with many different fellow students. She always preferred the process of study to the qualification itself. Eventually with Cert.III and Cert.IV in Art and Design under her belt, her 3 sons grown and left home Candy thought that a degree in fine art was the next step. After a year of travelling through the bush, destroying the suspension in her car and near exhaustion, she realized that it was time to stop being the student for a while, at least, and to move in another direction. Last November Candy set up her own Studio in Art and Design and for the moment works from home. One of her first projects was to complete hand making her first book titled “Stardust”; which has been hand bound, handwritten and accompanies 29 images of her artwork.
